Yay, 53 Countries! I'm truly astonished by this.

Today's extra special crap is, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Melody Rhythm & Harmony. I think it's acceptable to call them The Bulgarian Women's Choir/Chorus instead. That's what I call them. I really really like this one because they sound so different. You can pick out many cultural influences in the music, mostly due to the history of Bulgaria, but it's more than simply a hodge-podge of influences. It's unique, alien and beautiful. Just as your ears start to get used to it, they add something different to the mix. This is a live performance recorded in Norway in 1993 and was even nominated for a Grammy. This is also the full performance spanning 2 CDs. There are many Women in the Choir so they have a lot of things to sing about. It was also re-released in 1994 and trimmed down to one CD. I think the person responsible for that should be doing hard prison time and never be allowed to see the sun again!

come on, admit it. some of those countries are made up--

"Reunion"?! Seriously, is this near that "Rand McNally" island in the Pacific?

And Israel? I think they mean Palestine...

wait, no...those countries are definitely fake...

Europe? a country??

and put your mouse over "Reunion", a map doesn't appear?

I was confused about Reunion too. I've never heard of it before, it didn't show the map, and it used the French flag. But I used the intarweb and looked it up. Lo and behold, It's a real Country...well kind of. It's a tiny island off the coast of Madagascar. I think it's classified as a French possession, hence the French Flag. It actually has it's own flag. You can read about it here:

I'm not going to really nitpick if it's a real Country or not. I just think it's cool someone from a little island off the Coast of Madagascar looked at my crap.

I don't quite understand Europe showing up as a Country either. There's probably a reasonable explanation for it. If anyone knows, tell me. I'd like to know.
As far as the Israel comment goes, I ain't touching it.

Beautiful stuff. Discovered these when I bought two albums on the 4AD label (yes, same one as the pixies, dead can dance, etc...!!)about 15 years ago and have loved them ever since.Im not sure if they (or three of them anyway) also go by the name La Trio Bulgarka. If so they also have released material on the Hannibal label and guest on numerous artists albums (Kate Bush's Sensual World for one). Like this? Also try finnish group Varttina.

Thanks oiche,
I was even thinking about mentioning the 4AD connection. They enjoyed a little bit of success in the early 80's due to having a 4AD release. Many people at the time gobbeled up anything that was released on the 4AD label and thus were introduced to The Bulgarian Women's Choir. As far as Vartinna is concerned, click on the May 2006 archives link.
I posted Aitara by Vartinna and a video of them a few days ago. Both groups do the little, "YIP" thing.
Thanks for your comment, it's greatly appreciated.

I just realized why you have "Europe" among your countries - it's someone in the European Union offices. They have their own URL suffix, .eu.

thanks again for all the crap...

Hahaha.

Once again,
